School Restroom Project: Cutout and Cinematic by Aileen N. W.

Can I make a high school restroom interesting but still make it presentable and comfortable to students? When I searched for interesting restroom designs, they mostly give it a dirty, graffitied, public restroom look, and on the other side of the spectrum, the clean restrooms felt too bland and boring. I wanted to find a middle ground, and this is how I ended up with this project’s idea.

I did add a bit of graffiti, but realistically, it should be in places that teachers can’t see upon entering. I increased the number of posters, from club posters, to awareness posters, to a student council voting pamphlet. I stuck them everywhere and had some of them more withered or covered, as the event had passed, but no one took them off.

The art style was a bit inspired by Spiderverse, mostly in the color palette and the rendering style, but I never plan to directly copy the art style. The lighting was the hardest to tackle both in the cutout page and cinematic page. The restroom had 2 light sources that fought to be the main one. In the end, the window was always going to be more interesting than a simple light fixture.

I often forget to keep the values in mind when coloring, but this project was the first time that I consistently check back at the values as I continued rendering. I might still have a lot to practice in rendering, but being able to build a habit to consistently check the values amidst dong a piece is a huge win for me.
